A wide, moderately steep forestry lane leads through Kötschachtal to Alpengasthof Prossau (Gastein hiking book tour 16/1). Seclusion is guaranteed if you hike further: The path becomes narrower and steeper, with many turns it leads through the thick forest. On one side falls the wild „Kesselfall“ on the other stand the granite walls of the Bockstein Kogel up. The forest thins out and now leads into the flat valley floors over romantic Kühkar, a magical plateau with the half-standing Kesselkar-hut. Single pine and larch trees adorn the lonely moor. Very close to here the last bear in the Gastein Valley was killed nearly 150 years. Bears are no longer an issue here, however, you should turn back here. Although the path goes further to the „Kleinelendscharte” with the Bad Gastein Mountain clubs’ Ali-Lante-Biwak, it leadsto high alpine terrain and is for experienced mountaineers only. But those who do fall into this category will enjoy this great transition through the Carinthian Malta Valley.
